RICARDO MAGNUS OSÓRIO GALVÃO E LA DISTRUZIONE DELLA FORESTA AMAZZONICA
Authors Ciappelloni R
Abstract Professor Ricardo Galvão, is an internationally renowned intellectual who was at the attention of the international media due to a strong contrast with the Government of Brazil regarding the brasilian rainforest conservation. As director of the INPE (National Institute for Space Research) Galvão witnessed the progressive degradation of the Amazon forest cover due to the fires intentionally setted up to clean up from the trees, surfaces to be used for grazing, cutting timber and extracting minerals. The case has given to the Brazilian scientific community and civil society the opportunity to take position against the interests that seem to be at the base of the operations of economic valorization of the so-called "green lung of the world". This created a violent clash with the President Jair Bolsonaro, about the truthfulness of these data and the unnecessary alarmism caused by the scientist. The struggle ended with the departure of Galvao from INPE. Despite this striking fact, the scientific community has so far failed to really mobilize civil society by warning it about the danger that this destruction involves, not only for the extinction of thousands of animal and plant species, but also for the local Indian populations.
