Authors Ciappelloni R
Abstract In this editorial an enhanced version of the standard restaurant menu, here named the "narrative menu", is presented and discussed. A narrative menu can be considered, like an electronic magazine periodically distributed, a vehicle for selected information on food, its preparation, and availability. Through this informative pamphlet, located on the restaurants tables, diners using any smartphone, may access different narratives (storytelling) concerning the production and preparation of food. For this purpose, texts, video clips, podcasts, commented data sets, serious games and more will be used. This "restaurant document delivery" is achieved through the interaction between: customer mobile devices, such as smartphones, phablets, tablets and the menu augmented. For this purpose the menu will be equipped with special inserts such as: shortened links, QR codes, NFC microchips, Web trigger for Augmented Reality (WebAR). The menu thus becomes an "advanced publication", that uses an atypical distribution channel, consisting of: restaurants, cafeterias, snack bars and street food kiosks. Through their smartphone, customers can thus obtain selected information on: the origin of the products, the peculiar characteristics of the ingredients and the cooking methods used by the Chef. They will also be able to watch short videos describing how the vegetables or meats used in the kitchen are obtained, and even contact the farmers or breeders who produce them. This type of smart publication may play a role in defining new sales channels for producers, processors and restaurateurs, with positive effects also on the territory's economy.
