Abstract Enteric disease in calves are among the main causes of loss in bovine farming, caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites, often in association with each other. Literature data report that 57% of mortality in calves ageing from 0 to 6 months, particularly in the first four week of life, is due to gastrointestinal diseases. Bacteria and viruses apparently play the most relevant pathogenic role, but this is probably the consequence of the impact on the final exitus, while the role of parasites appears underestimated, for the course of the disease which is usually subclinical. Few data are available in literature regarding the occurrence of parasites in calves, but specific surveys, carried out at local and regional level, demonstrate a diffuse presence in bovine farms. Ninety-six species of parasites have been identified in Italian bovine farms; some of these appear particularly significant in calves, such a protozoa (Criptosporidium, Eimeria, and Giardia) and nematodes of the genres Strongyloides and Toxocara. The present paper describes the main biological features of these parasites, the clinical symptoms in calves, the diagnostic procedures, the therapy and the control measures. The aim is to underline the actual role of parasites as etiological agents of gastroenteritis in calves, in order to promote the adoption of appropriate biosecurity measures, correct management procedures and elevate the hygienic standards in the farms.
