Abstract
Objectives
The aim of this research was to deepen the knowledge on the assessment of well-being in dogs confined to kennels using animal-based physiological / pathological indicators and behaviors indicators. Specifically, we want to provide further pathophysiological indicators related to the well-being of dogs within the kennels in order to identify a limited set of indicators which, through specific analyzes, allow improve management and reduce healthcare expenses as quickly as possible.
Methodology
In the first year of research, we collected significant number of samples received by dogs confined in the kennels to assess the health status of dogs and the level of chronic stress; these animals have also been subjected to behavioral analysis. After a period of about 30 days from the entry into the kennel, dogs that were not given back to the owners were subjected to a second sampling. Two behavioral evaluations were also carried out (the first when dogs arrived in the kennel, the second after 30 days) to verify the degree of animal adaptation to the kennel life. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used for behavioral assessments. A specially trained veterinary carried out or supervised all behavioral evaluations.
Results
These results identify useful physiological indicators such as lysozyme, neutrophil granulocytes and monocytes. There are also correlations between the time spent in the kennel and dog’s behavior.
Discussion and Conclusions
Data analysis shows that some physiological indicators (lysozyme, neutrophil granulocytes, and monocytes) and dogs’ behavioral can be a useful tool for evaluating the welfare state in the kennel.
