Abstract The characteristics of reference manager Zotero, are described; this article intends to foster a structured informational activity on this software. The documentation was produced as part of the collaboration between the e-Journal "SPVet.it - Library of the Zooprofilattico Sperimentale Institute of Umbria and Marche" (Italy) and the "Centro Servizi Bibliotecari" - University of Perugia (Italy). The importance of Zotero is that it can really help authors to manage the citational aspects of a scientific publication. Thanks to this the submission of an article to a publisher is greatly simplified. However, the reference manager can be used equally well to organize the processing of an article, a monograph or a proposal. Thanks to the inclusion of annotations and keywords in the citation records it is easier to process the final text. So, it should be taken into the account, particularly by scientific journalists. The System has the ability to "read" the digital objects from which metadata are extracted, classify the heterogeneous information material with remarkable efficiency and manage large amounts of records The distributed structure of Zotero, allows to synchronize a library among the various information systems (such as desktop PCs and mobile devices) and between users who share a writing project through the Net. Zotero can rely on a large development community and its ease of use make it a considerable practical instrument. For these reasons, the use of the citational manager is a mandatory choice also for practitioner who need to process formally accurate documents in the time frame required by the research activity.
