Abstract In this paper the digital library as a combination of a service, information resources such as databases, images and documents, is described. Rather than a new type of library, we may see it as a natural evolution of the contemporary library. This structure born in an informative context in which there are four dimensions: users, technology, services, which are the main function of each digital library and contents, that is all sorts of documents. This new type of library can be defined both for the reference user (who can be specialized or generic), and for the different types of resources collected (music, printed documents, maps, patents, images). The use of the term library 2.0, remains in any case a convenient label to express the consequences of the application of Web to the world of libraries, to define a study environment and information with innovative features linked to the Internet.
